SUMMARY:Spice Up Your Life Kit / Kit de especias
DESCRIPTION:Stop by Gilroy Library’s upstairs Information Desk and ask for a Spice Up Your Life Kit! \nCumin is part of the parsley family. It can be added to cheese\, breads\, curry\, and chili powder. It originates from Central Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean. Heat brings out the flavor of this spice. When added in the beginning of the recipe\, the flavor profile will be more earthy\, with a hint of citrus. Adding it after the ingredients have heated up changes the flavor profile to herbal. \nThe kit contains a sample of the spice\, a few tasty recipes\, and book recommendations! Be sure to pick one up while supplies last.

SUMMARY:Adult Nonfiction Book Discussion: The fear of too much justice: race\, poverty\, and the persistence of inequality in the criminal courts
DESCRIPTION:Open to all adults who love to read and discuss non-fictional literature. In December\, the Cupertino Library Adult Nonfiction Book Group will talk about The fear of too much justice: race\, poverty\, and the persistence of inequality in the criminal courts.by Stephen B. Bright and James Kwak (2023) \nAuthors Stephen B. Bright and James Kwak’s book delves into the problem of how our actual criminal justice system generally fails to live up to the values of “liberty and justice for all.” In fact America’s criminal justice system is weighted against defendants of color and anyone too poor to hire competent lawyers. Between receiving incompetent legal defense through assigned public defenders\, overly powerful prosecutors and threats of excessive jail time to force defendants into a plea bargain\, and judges seeking re-election through their willingness to imposed the death penalty and crippling court fees that keep people who cannot pay them in jail\, finding justice is a huge problem. Bright and Kwak propose that the courts could improve the odds of equal justice being served  by   the elimination of unjust fees and for profit incarceration\, and significantly curbing the power of prosecutors. \nThe Adult Nonfiction Book Discussion Group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11am in Room 201B. All meetings are sponsored by The Friends of the Cupertino Library \nFor accessibility accommodations (ex. ASL)\, please fill out the online form at sccld.org/accessibility 7+days prior to the event. If you need assistance with the form\, speak with a staff member at your local library\, call (408) 540-3945\, or email us at ask@sccl.org.

SUMMARY:Nature Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, December 14\, 2025 Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm Location: Conference Room \nNature lovers and science enthusiasts\, we invite you to be part of our Nature Book Club!  In December\, we'll discover hidden worlds our human senses can't detect\, in An Immense World\, by Ed Yong.   Every two months\, we’ll explore nonfiction books about nature and science\, and compare notes in a friendly\, welcoming discussion. \nOctober's book is An Immense World by Ed Yong \nAbout An Immense World:  \nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “thrilling” (The New York Times)\, “dazzling” (The Wall Street Journal) tour of the radically different ways that animals perceive the world that will fill you with wonder and forever alter your perspective\, by Pulitzer Prize–winning science journalist Ed Yong \n“One of this year’s finest works of narrative nonfiction.”—Oprah Daily \nONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, Time\, People\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, Slate\, Reader’s Digest\, Chicago Public Library\, Outside\, Publishers Weekly\, BookPage \nONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Oprah Daily\, The New Yorker\, The Washington Post\, The Guardian\, The Economist\, Smithsonian Magazine\, Prospect (UK)\, Globe & Mail\, Esquire\, Mental Floss\, Marginalian\, She Reads\, Kirkus Reviews\, Library Journal \nA KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST NONFICTION BOOK OF THE CENTURY \nThe Earth teems with sights and textures\, sounds and vibrations\, smells and tastes\, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal\, including humans\, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble\, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. \nIn An Immense World\, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses\, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent\, waves of electromagnetism\, and pulses of pressure that surround us. We encounter beetles that are drawn to fires\, turtles that can track the Earth’s magnetic fields\, fish that fill rivers with electrical messages\, and even humans who wield sonar like bats. We discover that a crocodile’s scaly face is as sensitive as a lover’s fingertips\, that the eyes of a giant squid evolved to see sparkling whales\, that plants thrum with the inaudible songs of courting bugs\, and that even simple scallops have complex vision. We learn what bees see in flowers\, what songbirds hear in their tunes\, and what dogs smell on the street. We listen to stories of pivotal discoveries in the field\, while looking ahead at the many mysteries that remain unsolved. \nFunny\, rigorous\, and suffused with the joy of discovery\, An Immense World takes us on what Marcel Proust called “the only true voyage . . . not to visit strange lands\, but to possess other eyes.” \nWINNER OF THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL • FINALIST FOR THE KIRKUS PRIZE • FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/E.O.
