Attendants in crisp uniforms rushed to greet drivers\, filling tanks\, checking oil and tire pressure\, and polishing windshields with a smile. At its peak\, the small city of San Carlos boasted 23 stations. Today\, only five remain. \nWhether you remember the golden era of full-service stations or grew up in the age of self-serve pumps and mini-marts\, you’ll enjoy this richly illustrated look back at a vanished way of life. Rare\, never-before-seen photographs from local archives and private collections will bring the Peninsula’s car culture to life. \nAbout the Speakers: \nBruce C. Cumming enjoyed a 42-year career in California law enforcement\, serving as Police Chief of Menlo Park and Morgan Hill. A lifelong car enthusiast\, he owns several vintage automobiles and collects petroleum memorabilia. \nNicholas A. DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness meditation is a wonderful way to develop clarity\, discipline\, and perspective as well as improve your mental and physical health. Join online sessions with Phuong Pham\, a Buddhist nun experienced in the practice of meditation. Each session is 45 minutes of meditating together followed by 15 minutes of group sharing and Q&A led by Phuong. The group sharing and Q&A is a valuable part of the process\, so participants can reflect on the meditation session together and build community. This family-friendly program is hosted in Italian and open to all including native speakers and those interested in learning new languages.  \nFounded in 2002\, La Scuola International School – the only Reggio Emilia inspired\, International Baccalaureate (IB) and Italian language immersion school in the world – is serving the Bay Area with two San Francisco campuses (Preschool – Grade 8)\, and one new campus in Silicon Valley (Preschool – Grade 2). DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn the basics of engineering and Python programming; no prior knowledge needed! In 8-weeks\, we’ll cover Python fundamentals\, hands-on projects\, and grow our technical skills and enthusiasm for future STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art\, and Math) learning opportunities. \nThis program is intended for 3-5th grade students. This program meets weekly on Sundays starting at 11:00 AM from September 14th through November 2nd. Registration is required for the full 8-week series\, as each session builds upon the last.*  \nDue to limited library laptop availability\, bringing your own device with Wi-Fi connection capabilities for coding is highly encouraged! If you cannot bring a laptop\, please check out a Chromebook at the library’s front desk ahead of time for each class. \n*Registration will open on August 14th at 9:00 AM.

DESCRIPTION:This training will equip participants with knowledge and tools to serve as legal observers to verify and document ICE activity in the local community\, to provide accompaniment support\, and to help ensure that immigrants’ rights are protected. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and join a network of volunteers coordinated by the Santa Clara County Rapid Response Network\, who will be conducting this training. \nThe Santa Clara County Rapid Response Network is a County-funded community defense project developed to protect immigrant families and coordinates the 24/7 Rapid Response Hotline in Santa Clara County which provides emergency legal support to individuals who are detained and other assistance to their families.  \nRegistration is optional. If you register\, you will receive an email reminder for the training.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Come and improve your mental and physical health in mindfulness meditation sessions led by Phuong Pham. Each session is 45 minutes of sitting and/or walking meditation followed by 15 minutes of group sharing and Q&A. It is open to all levels of experience and no registration is required. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats and/or meditation cushions. Chairs are available for those who do not bring them. \nPhuong is a Buddhist nun experienced in leading mindfulness meditation.
