SUMMARY:Monthly STEM Workshop - The Crossover: How Everyday Transportation Interacts with Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly STEM Workshop presented by teen volunteers in Girls Empowered in Math and Science (GEMS)! This one-hour workshop includes a brief presentation explaining the concepts involved in the activities. \nHappy New Year\, and welcome back to GEMS science workshops with The Crossover! We’ll be opening up 2026 with an engineering-based lab exploring the physics and popular structural types behind bridges. Participants will have the opportunity to build miniature models of two widely-used bridge types: the suspension bridge and the straw-truss bridge. Students will also compare the structural integrity between numerous simple structure bridges through paper modeling. Join us this January to close that knowledge gap! \nFree. No registration required. Recommended for elementary school students. Presented by teen volunteers in Girls Empowered in Math and Science (GEMS).  \nSpecial thanks to the Friends’ of the Cambrian Library for their generosity! \nADA Accommodation Requests

SUMMARY:Silicon Valley Reads Book Discussion: "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and thought-provoking discussion of “Front Desk” by Kelly Yang!  \nBased on the author’s real-life experience\, Kelly Yang’s award-winning novel follows 10-year-old Mia Tang\, a recent Chinese immigrant whose family manages a rundown motel in California. While facing poverty\, racism\, and the unfairness of the American Dream\, Mia bravely takes on the role of front desk manager—but her real job is building a community. Front Desk illustrates “Bridges to Belonging” as Mia\, her parents\, and the long-term tenants (“weeklies”) transform the Calivista Motel into a sanctuary for close friends. Through compassion and courage\, they stand up for one another against injustice\, proving that a sense of belonging is a powerful force created not by wealth or status\, but by kindness\, solidarity\, and finding your voice to fight for those who need a place to call home. \nBring your creativity to a special project with your peers and enjoy a fun\, engaging activity! Snacks will be offered to participants. \nIn today’s world\, the need for connection is more important and more powerful than ever. Our 2026 theme\, Bridges to Belonging\, explores how we can build bridges... to one another\, to our families\, and to our communities\, to create genuine belonging. \nRecommended for middle-grade students. \nFree. Registration required. \n\nThis event is a part of the annual Silicon Valley Reads (SV Reads) program. \nADA Accommodation Requests

SUMMARY:Art of the African Diaspora Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 100th Year Commemoration of Black History Month with San Jose Public Library!  \nExplore the 2026 Art of the African Diaspora Exhibit in the DiNapoli Gallery\, located on the second floor of the King Library from Sunday\, January 11 – Sunday\, February 22\, 2026. \n \nAn Artist Reception complete with a meet and greet\, panel interview and light refreshments will be held on Sunday\, February 22\, 2026 from 2 – 3:30 pm in Room 225 (Second Floor.) \n \n\n \n \nAbout the Art of the African Diaspora (AOTD) \nArt of the African Diaspora (AOTD) is the longest running event of its kind in the Bay Area. It originated from a salon for African American artists known as Colors of Black that was organized in 1989 by artist and professor Marie Johnson Calloway. Over the next twenty-five years the exhibition ensured the increased visibility for African American artists in the Bay Area. In 2019\, the organization became aware of the necessity to incorporate a broader vision of the African Diaspora and consequently renamed the organization Art of the African Diaspora. AOTD\, in partnership with Richmond Art Center\, supports artists of African descent in the Bay Area through representation\, professional development\, and building a creative community. \nTo spread its message\, influence\, and to increase visibility of African American artists in the Bay Area\, AOTD has created satellite exhibits in various locations throughout the Bay. AOTD does open calls for artists and creates exhibits to be displayed in time to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr and to honor Black History Month. San Jose Public Library has been a satellite for AOTD since 2023\, debuting in the Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Library in 2023 and traveling to the Dr. Roberto Cruz Alum Rock Library in 2024 and returning to the Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr Library in 2025. \n \nFree Program.
