SUMMARY:Online ESL Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to join a book club but feel uncomfortable with your English skills? \nJoin our ESL Book Club! Practice reading and speaking English while having fun and making new friends. \nFor the month of August\, we will be reading The Art Thief by Michael Finkel. For centuries\, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world\, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly ten years-in museums and cathedrals all over Europe-Breitwieser\, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout\, stole more than three hundred objects\, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion. In The Art Thief\, Michael Finkel brings us into Breitwieser’s strange and fascinating world. Unlike most thieves\, he never stole for money\, keeping all his treasures in a single room where he could admire them to his heart’s content. Possessed of a remarkable athleticism and an innate ability to assess practically any security system\, Breitwieser managed to pull off a breathtakingly number of audacious thefts. Yet these strange talents bred a growing disregard for risk and an addict’s need to score\, leading Breitwieser to ignore his girlfriend’s pleas to stop-until one final act of hubris brought everything crashing down. \nDigital and hard copies are available in the catalog. \n \nRegistration is required. \nYou will receive an email with the Zoom link for the discussion a few days before the discussion and on the day of the discussion a reminder email will also contain a Zoom link. \nIf you are not familiar with Zoom\, please review these resources: \nGetting Started with Zoom \nZoom technical requirements \n \nFor accessibility accommodations (ex. ASL)\, please fill out the online form at sccld.org/accessibility 7+days prior to the event. If you need assistance with the form\, speak with a staff member at your local library\, call (408) 540-3945\, or email us at ask@sccl.org.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Dr. Tasha Eurich
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to master the daily grind and become shatterproof in a tumultuous world with key insights from Dr. Tasha Eurich as she discusses her newest book\, Shatterproof: How to Thrive in a World of Constant Chaos (and why resilience alone isn’t enough). \nAre you working too much but still feel like it’s never enough? Have you turned pretending you’re “fine” into an art form? Does self-care feel like just another item on your already long to-do list? \nWe’ve been taught that resilience is the secret to navigating life’s most difficult moments. But according to New York Times bestselling author\, organizational psychologist\, and researcher Dr. Tasha Eurich\, there’s a problem with that assumption: scientifically\, resilience isn’t an unlimited resource—especially with the increasing pressure and uncertainty we face today. \nWhether you’re grappling with work stress\, personal challenges\, or the chaos of everyday life\, Shatterproof offers an urgent alternative to stoic endurance as the only path to survival. Combining cutting-edge research\, practical tools\, and insights from her own life-defining health crisis\, Dr. Eurich challenges conventional thinking and presents a science-backed framework to help you feel better\, perform better\, and live better. You’ll discover how to: \n\nReclaim your best self when stress turns you into someone you barely recognize\nUncover the unmet needs that keep you stuck in self-limiting patterns\nTransform stress into strength\, exhaustion into energy\, and confusion into confidence\nFind peace in the present and prepare for what the future holds\n\nThis timely conversation with Dr. Eurich is sure to unlock powerful new ways to show up as your best self—even in the most chaotic times. \n— \nThe free\, virtual series is open to the public and takes place two to three times a month. All author talks will include the opportunity to ask the author questions. Click here for a complete list of upcoming events in this series.   \nA link for this event will be sent approximately 24 hours before the event. Participants who register within 24 hours of the event will receive a single email containing the link to the program. This program will be recorded and posted here after the event and will only be available for viewing for a limited time. \n— \nThe Santa Clara County Library District is proud to present a virtual monthly author talk series featuring bestselling\, award-winning\, and highly acclaimed authors from around the world.  The featured writers and thought leaders will cover a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres.
