SUMMARY:Monthly STEM Workshop - The Crossover: How Everyday Transportation Interacts with Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly STEM Workshop presented by teen volunteers in Girls Empowered in Math and Science (GEMS)! This one-hour workshop includes a brief presentation explaining the concepts involved in the activities. \nHappy New Year\, and welcome back to GEMS science workshops with The Crossover! We’ll be opening up 2026 with an engineering-based lab exploring the physics and popular structural types behind bridges. Participants will have the opportunity to build miniature models of two widely-used bridge types: the suspension bridge and the straw-truss bridge. Students will also compare the structural integrity between numerous simple structure bridges through paper modeling. Join us this January to close that knowledge gap! \nFree. No registration required. Recommended for elementary school students. Presented by teen volunteers in Girls Empowered in Math and Science (GEMS).  \nSpecial thanks to the Friends’ of the Cambrian Library for their generosity! \nADA Accommodation Requests

SUMMARY:Silicon Valley Reads Book Discussion: "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and thought-provoking discussion of “Front Desk” by Kelly Yang!  \nBased on the author’s real-life experience\, Kelly Yang’s award-winning novel follows 10-year-old Mia Tang\, a recent Chinese immigrant whose family manages a rundown motel in California. While facing poverty\, racism\, and the unfairness of the American Dream\, Mia bravely takes on the role of front desk manager—but her real job is building a community. Front Desk illustrates “Bridges to Belonging” as Mia\, her parents\, and the long-term tenants (“weeklies”) transform the Calivista Motel into a sanctuary for close friends. Through compassion and courage\, they stand up for one another against injustice\, proving that a sense of belonging is a powerful force created not by wealth or status\, but by kindness\, solidarity\, and finding your voice to fight for those who need a place to call home. \nBring your creativity to a special project with your peers and enjoy a fun\, engaging activity! Snacks will be offered to participants. \nIn today’s world\, the need for connection is more important and more powerful than ever. Our 2026 theme\, Bridges to Belonging\, explores how we can build bridges... to one another\, to our families\, and to our communities\, to create genuine belonging. \nRecommended for middle-grade students. \nFree. Registration required. \n\nThis event is a part of the annual Silicon Valley Reads (SV Reads) program. \nADA Accommodation Requests
