SUMMARY:Brazilian Screenings & Maria Farinha Films present A Table for All
DESCRIPTION:What if food waste could be transformed into gourmet meals for socially vulnerable communities? Renowned visionary chef Massimo Bottura\, founder of the world’s best restaurant\, brings together international culinary icons—such as Joan Roca\, Alain Ducasse\, and Virgilio Martí nez—to prove that food destined for the trash can become something far more meaningful. At the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games\, tons of surplus ingredients from the Olympic Village are reinvented at Refettorio Gastromotiva\, a groundbreaking soup kitchen where cooking becomes an act of care\, dignity\, and social change. This 53-minute documentary in Portuguese with English subtitles was directed by Kiko Ribeiro and Andre Finotti. The production company is Maria Farinha Films. View the trailer here.Curator’s notesTable for All documents a powerful initiative led by the Brazilian non-governmental organization Gastromotiva\, in partnership with the Food for Soul Foundation\, founded by Chef Massimo Bottura. Together\, these organizations work to provide nutritious\, high-quality food to people facing food insecurity. Grounded in a real-world project\, the film addresses one of the most urgent challenges of contemporary society: food waste in a world where millions of people lack reliable access to food. It also engages with broader themes such as urban agriculture\, reconnection with nature\, and the principles of the Slow Food movement. Through a creative\, deeply human approach\, the initiative invites us to rethink our relationship with food and restore dignity to individuals living in vulnerable conditions. \nRodrigo Torres\, a Brazilian film curator based in Southern California\, introduces each film to provide context and to enhance the audience’s understanding. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in cinema and an MFA in Visual Arts and began his career in the camera department on movie sets. Rodrigo worked as a curator and film programmer for the State Department of Culture at the renowned Cine Brasília movie theater. In partnership with the State Department of Education\, Rodrigo organized special screenings for students of all ages and served as the General Media Coordinator\, contributing to public policies for financing film productions and exhibitions. In California\, he worked at the Aquarius Theatre\, taught at Palo Alto Adult School (PAUSD)\, and currently serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Art at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. \nThe next Brazilian Screening is Saturday\, April 25.

SUMMARY:Informed Community Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, January 24\, 2026 Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm Location: Conference Room \nJoin us for the Informed Community Book Club\, a space dedicated to exploring and discussing pertinent social\, economic\, and political issues. If you are interested in participating in our democratic institutions or just making friends\, join us!  \nJanuary’s book will be The Jakarta Method\, by Vincent Blevins. \nFrom the publisher’s website: \nNAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR\, THE FINANCIAL TIMES\, AND GQ \n“A radical new history of the United States abroad” (Wall Street Journal) which uncovers U.S. complicity in the mass-killings of left-wing activists in Indonesia\, Latin America and around the world \nIn 1965\, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians—eliminating the largest Communist Party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring other copycat terror programs.\n \nIn this bold and comprehensive new history\, Vincent Bevins draws from recently declassified documents\, archival research\, and eyewitness testimony to reveal a shocking legacy that spans the globe. For decades\, it’s been believed that the developing world passed peacefully into the US-led capitalist system. The Jakarta Method demonstrates that the brutal extermination of unarmed leftists was a fundamental part of Washington’s final triumph in the Cold War. \nThe discussion will be hosted by former Los Gatos Planning Commissioner and current president of the Los Gatos Anti-Racism Coalition Jeff Suzuki.

SUMMARY:Jade: Stone of Heaven
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, January 22\, 2026 Time: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Presenter: Jane Dalisay Location: Online \nRegistration is required. Sign up below to receive the Zoom information on the morning of the event.  \nIf you thought diamonds were forever\, you should consider jade. For millennia\, this stone has been valued\, revered\, and imbued with meaning by many Asian cultures. Admired by emperors\, praised by scholars\, and frequently used as an ornament to enhance physical beauty\, jade is believed to have life-prolonging qualities and considered by some to be more precious than gold. Over thousands of years\, artists have drawn inspiration from nature and creatively worked jade into various sizes\, forms\, and shapes; meanwhile\, many layers of meaning have been associated with the essence and quality of jade objects. This program presents the story of jade\, beginning with a brief introduction to how the stone is worked\, followed by an appreciation of select jade pieces with a focus on their function as well as their symbolic and auspicious meanings. Presented by the Asian Art Museum. \n \nThis event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Mountain View Library.

SUMMARY:Documentary: UNAFF presents The Librarians
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of The Librarians\, which premiered at The Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Kim A Snyder\, who is also a producer\, and produced by Janique L Robillard and Maria Cuomo-Cole\, this 83-minute documentary examines new strictures on school librarians. Book banning was nothing new to the world\, but in October 2021\, Texas State Representative Matt Krause issued a list of 850 books for schools to review for obscene and race-related content\, urging officials to develop standards to ensure “pornography” and anything that may make students feel “discomfort\, guilt or anguish” be removed. As the culture wars rage\, parental rights groups dig in nationwide and pre-existing book review protocols are overturned by school boards across the country. A chilling effect sets in as book-banning crusaders become more coordinated and vulnerable librarians are targeted ferociously. View the trailer here. \nKim A Snyder’s most recent film\, Death by Numbers\, was Oscar-nominated for Best Short Documentary. Prior films include Us Kids\, Newtown\, Lessons from a School Shooting\, Welcome to Shelbyville\, I Remember Me and Trevor. Documentary filmmaker and creative producer Janique L Robillard’s recent producing credits include Death by Numbers and 1000 Time. Maria Cuomo Cole most recently produced the Academy Award-nominated documentary short film Death by Numbers\, as well as The Librarians and  Us Kids\, all in collaboration with director/producer Kim A. Snyder. The film team also partnered on Lessons from a School Shooting: Notes from Dunblane and Newtown. She also produced The Hunting Ground. \nUnited Nations Association Film Festival presents documentaries on topical subjects. Jasmina Bojic\, Stanford lecturer and International Documentary Film Festival UNAFF founder and director\, facilitates discussions with filmmakers and producers. For more information\, please visit www.unaff.org. \nRegistration is not required\, but registering means you will receive an email reminder the day before. \nThis documentary is the first in a series of three for Silicon Valley Reads.
