SUMMARY:Informed Community Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, November 15\, 2025 Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm Location: Conference Room \nJoin us for the Informed Community Book Club\, a space dedicated to exploring and discussing pertinent social\, economic\, and political issues. If you are interested in participating in our democratic institutions or just making friends\, join us!  \nNovember's book will be They Thought They Were Free by Milton Mayer. \nFrom the publisher's website: \n“When this book was first published it received some attention from the critics but none at all from the public. Nazism was finished in the bunker in Berlin and its death warrant signed on the bench at Nuremberg.”\n \nThat’s Milton Mayer\, writing in a foreword to the 1966 edition of They Thought They Were Free. He’s right about the critics: the book was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1956. General readers may have been slower to take notice\, but over time they did—what we’ve seen over decades is that any time people\, across the political spectrum\, start to feel that freedom is threatened\, the book experiences a ripple of word-of-mouth interest.\n \nThey Thought They Were Free is an eloquent and provocative examination of the development of fascism in Germany. Mayer’s book is a study of ten Germans and their lives from 1933-45\, based on interviews he conducted after the war when he lived in Germany. Mayer had a position as a research professor at the University of Frankfurt and lived in a nearby small Hessian town which he disguised with the name “Kronenberg.” “These ten men were not men of distinction\,” Mayer noted\, but they had been members of the Nazi Party; Mayer wanted to discover what had made them Nazis. His discussions with them of Nazism\, the rise of the Reich\, and mass complicity with evil became the backbone of this book\, an indictment of the ordinary German that is all the more powerful for its refusal to let the rest of us pretend that our moment\, our society\, our country are fundamentally immune. \nThe discussion will be hosted by former Los Gatos Planning Commissioner and current president of the Los Gatos Anti-Racism Coalition Jeff Suzuki.

SUMMARY:Native American Song and Dance Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Future Generations is a cultural collaboration of Native American singers\, dancers\, and artists from the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Guided by our mission to honor our ancestors and their teachings through cultural expressions of the past\, present\, and future\, we strive to educate the public about the songs\, dances\, art\, food\, and traditions of the Indigenous Peoples of America. \nThe group was founded to promote and celebrate the beauty and heritage of Native American social dance and singing styles\, commonly showcased at Pow Wows. By sharing the richness of our culture\, we aim to foster resilience\, empowerment\, and leadership both individually and collectively within our communities. \nThis program is part of the Santa Clara County Library District’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month. \nFor accessibility accommodations (ex. ASL)\, please fill out the online form at sccld.org/accessibility 7+days prior to the event. If you need assistance with the form\, speak with a staff member at your local library\, call (408) 540-3945\, or email us at ask@lib.sccgov.org.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Backlash to the '51st State' Idea: Why Canada Has Long Been Wary of Its Biggest Ally
DESCRIPTION:Santa Clara University Professor Greg Wigmore will give this talk in partnership with the Los Gatos/Saratoga AAUW.  \nTopics covered include: \n-Leaders on both sides of the 5\,525 mile-long Canada-U.S. boundary have long touted the “world’s longest undefended border” as a global model for how good neighbors should behave \n– Canadians’ fears of American annexation or absorption have ebbed and flowed over time but can be traced back to the beginning of the American Revolution 250 years ago \n– A brief survey of the high and low points in the relationship helps explain why the president’s recent rhetoric questioning Canada’s independence and inviting it to become the “51st state” has created opposition in Canada \nAbout the speaker:Gregory Wigmore teaches a broad range of courses in U.S. and North American history. His research and teaching focus on the intersection of social and political history and foreign relations\, especially the role of frontiers and borders. \nHe received his Ph.D. in history from the University of California\, Davis and his bachelor’s in journalism and history from Carleton University in Ottawa\, Canada. In 2014\, he was the Peckham Postdoctoral Fellow in Revolutionary America at the University of Michigan’s Clements Library. More recently\, he was a Sproul Research Fellow in Canadian Studies at the University of California\, Berkeley.
