SUMMARY:AstroPIC: Integrated Photonics for Exoplanet Imaging
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, September 3\, 2025 Time: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Presenter: Dr. Rachel Morgan Location: 1st Floor Program Room \nSeating is limited. Registration is recommended. Walk-ins are also welcome. \nJoin us for a fascinating talk with Dr. Rachel Morgan\, Optical Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center and the SETI Institute. She will share how new coronagraph technology could make it possible to directly image distant Earth-like exoplanets. \nDirect imaging of Earth-like exoplanets is critical to the search for extraterrestrial life. Capturing the light from Exo-Earths is challenging because an Earth-like planet is 10 billion times dimmer than its host star\, meaning that extremely precise and complex optical systems called coronagraphs are required to block out the starlight while preserving the planet signal. The AstroPIC project is applying a new type of optical technology to tackle this challenge by using a programmable photonic integrated circuit to separate the starlight from the planet light with an instrument that promises to be orders of magnitude smaller and more resilient to telescope errors than traditional coronagraph designs. \nThis talk will discuss the design and experimental results from the first prototype of the AstroPIC coronagraph at NASA Ames Research Center\, which has recently demonstrated record-breaking on-chip contrast ratios of over 90 dB.  \nAbout the Presenter: Dr. Rachel Morgan is an Optical Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center/SETI Institute. She works with the Exoplanet Technology Group on applying integrated photonics technology to astronomy instruments. She holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from MIT (2023) where she researched small satellite optical payloads and integrated photonics device design. Outside of research\, she enjoys playing the saxophone and maintaining a very long Duolingo streak! \nA Sci-Fi September Event \n \nThis event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Mountain View Library

SUMMARY:3D Printing Drop-In @ TeenHQ
DESCRIPTION:Middle and high school students are welcome to explore 3D printing with this drop-in program at TeenHQ’s MakerSpace. Teens will learn the (very) basics of 3D printing\, test a design for printability\, then schedule their print for later pick-up. \nTeens can choose a design from Thingiverse or bring their own design from home. Designs from home must be in an .stl file format and fit on a USB. All prints must be able to go on a TeenHQ USB and claimed when print is available for pick-up. Designs are considered printable if able to load and save on Lulzbot Cura\, but the librarian has final say. All prints must take less than 4 hrs 30 min to print. All eligible prints are free. \nProgram is first come\, first serve. The first 8 teens will be able to reserve prints.  \nLaptops are available. \nAll who schedule a print must pick up their print within 3 weeks of being notified their print is ready unless you notify the librarian of any issues. The librarian will email and/or call to notify that the print is ready at TeenHQ for pick-up. \nPlease be aware that: \n\nNo weapons or items that could be construed as a weapon will be accepted for print. \nPrints that are considered obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment will be not accepted for print. \nThe library’s 3D printers must be used only for lawful purposes. All local\, state\, and federal laws must be followed. \nFor this program\, 3D printers will only be operated by library staff. \nAccepted prints may not violate any third party’s intellectual property\, such as copyright\, patent\, or trademark. \nLibrary staff reserve the right to refuse any 3D print request. \nSJPL and library staff are not responsible for malfunctions or misprints. \n\nThis program is free. No pre-registration required. \nThis program is specifically for Middle and High Schoolers. Adult caregivers and younger siblings will be asked to sit in the Teen Reading Room while they wait. \nADA Accommodation Requests

SUMMARY:On Writing Darkly Charming Villainous Love with Hannah Nicole Maehrer
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, September 3\, 2025 Time: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm Presenter: Hannah Nicole Maehrer Location: Online \nRegistration is required. Click this link to attend the virtual event. \nEmbrace your dark side (and your best evil laugh) and join us in conversation with Hannah Nicole Maehrer\, creator of the New York Times bestselling Assistant to the Villain series.  \nEvie Sage didn’t mean to become the right-hand woman to the kingdom’s most terrifying villain. One minute\, she was applying for an entry-level position that promised “light paperwork and occasional beheadings\,” and the next\, she was knee-deep in magical mayhem\, murder plots\, and an entirely inappropriate crush on her brooding\, sharp-jawed\, walking disaster of a boss. \nNow\, with a magical prophecy unraveling\, assassins showing up in the break room\, and a suspicious amount of frogs wearing crowns\, Evie has to figure out how to survive her job without setting the kingdom on fire―or her dignity\, which is hanging by a very sarcastic thread. \nBeing evil-adjacent was never part of the five-year plan. But then again…neither was falling for The Villain. \nFull of humor and heart\, this magical office comedy about a sunshine assistant and her grumpy evil boss is one you won’t want to miss out on. With the third book in the series\, Accomplice to the Villain\, out August 5\, 2025\, you need to register today to learn what tricks are up this author’s sleeve! \nNot able to attend live? You can access the recording for this event and all Online Author Series events on our website shortly after they conclude. \nAbout the Author: Hannah Nicole Maehrer—or as TikTok Knows her\, @hannahnicolemae—is a fantasy romance author and BookToker with a propensity for villains. When she’s not creating bookish comedy skits about Villains and Assistants\, she’s writing to Taylor Swift songs. Her biggest passions in life include romance\, magic\, laughter\, and finding ways to include them all in everything she creates. Most days you can find her with her head in the clouds and a pen in her hand. \n \nThis event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Mountain View Library.
