SUMMARY:Online Author Talk : Jay Falk
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, August 5\, 2025 Time: 11:00am – 12:00pm Location: Online \nRegister here and submit your questions for the author before the event begins. \nDelve into the fascinating world of birds through astonishing photography and clear explanations in this absorbing global guide\, The Bird Book: The Stories\, Science\, and History of Birds. \nBirds are dinosaurs with a history going back millions of years. Our fascination with them runs deep in history\, and our close association is reflected in creation stories\, myths\, legends\, songs\, and children's stories. \n This book and presentation explore: \n\nBoth the natural history of birds and that deep cultural connection. From their evolution and anatomy to their behavior and diversity.\n\n\nHawks\, finches\, swans\, or birds of paradise\, moving the focus away from a predictable species-by-species account and allowing for truly global coverage. \n\n\nThe bold nature of European Robins and why they are associated with Christmas; the mythical Phoenix\, which rises from the ashes; and learn about eagles\, from their hunting prowess to their myriads of stories and symbolism.\n\nPacked with information\, beautiful photography\, and illustrations\, The Bird Book is a must-have for nature enthusiasts. Register today to learn more about your very own backyard friends! \n About the Author: Dr. Jay Jinsing Falk is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the University of Colorado. He is an evolutionary biologist and behavioral ecologist fascinated by the diversity that can be found within species\, especially in sexual traits. During his PhD\, he began studying White-necked Jacobin hummingbirds as a STRI Short-Term Fellow\, and later as a Smithsonian Predoctoral Fellow. His findings\, that some females of this species look like males while others do not\, has become the cornerstone of his research program. He is inspired by the dizzying array of feather coloration that can be found in hummingbirds. After completing his PhD at Cornell University\, he moved to the University of Washington to study hummingbird movement and metabolism. Now at the University of Colorado\, he is investigating the genetics and development of feather coloration. Jay currently lives in Gamboa\, Panamá\, where he studies the hummingbirds that visit the feeders at his house on the edge of the forest. \n  \n*Note: While the book will be discussed\, please be aware the presenter may explore other topics in the related fields suiting their additional expertise. Presenters can be expected to be experts in the field; however\, for the Smithsonian and Library Speakers Consortium Collaboration they may not always be the author of the book being highlighted. \nTo register\, or to watch at a later date visit the Author Talk webpage. \nThe Los Gatos Library recognizes the diversity of our community and is committed to accessibility for all patrons. We strive to make every visitor feel comfortable by ensuring equal access to programs\, services\, and activities. If you require a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in a library program\, please contact library@losgatosca.gov \n

SUMMARY:Nature Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, August 10\, 2025 Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm Location: Conference Room \nNature lovers and science enthusiasts\, we invite you to be part of our Nature Book Club!  In August\, we travel back to the 18th century and explore a scientific rivalry\, in Every Living Thing by Jason Roberts.   Every two months\, we’ll explore nonfiction books about nature and science\, and compare notes in a friendly\, welcoming discussion. \nAugust's book is Every Living Thing by Jason Roberts \nAbout Every Living Thing:  \nAn epic\, extraordinary account of scientific rivalry and obsession in the quest to survey all of life on Earth—a competition “with continued repercussions for Western views of race. [This] vivid double biography is a passionate corrective” (The New York Times Book Review\, Editors’ Choice). \n“[A] vibrant scientific saga . . . at once important\, outrageous\, enlightening\, entertaining\, enduring\, and still evolving.”—Dava Sobel\, author of Longitude \nA KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR \nIn the eighteenth century\, two men—exact contemporaries and polar opposites—dedicated their lives to the same daunting task: identifying and describing all life on Earth. Carl Linnaeus\, a pious Swedish doctor with a huckster’s flair\, believed that life belonged in tidy\, static categories. Georges-Louis de Buffon\, an aristocratic polymath and keeper of France’s royal garden\, viewed life as a dynamic swirl of complexities. Each began his task believing it to be difficult but not impossible: How could the planet possibly hold more than a few thousand species—or as many could fit on Noah’s Ark? \nBoth fell far short of their goal\, but in the process they articulated starkly divergent views on nature\, the future of the Earth\, and humanity itself. Linnaeus gave the world such concepts as mammal\, primate\, and Homo sapiens\, but he also denied that species change and he promulgated racist pseudoscience. Buffon formulated early prototypes of evolution and genetics\, warned of global climate change\, and argued passionately against prejudice. The clash of their conflicting worldviews continued well after their deaths\, as their successors contended for dominance in the emerging science that came to be called biology. \nIn Every Living Thing\, Jason Roberts weaves a sweeping\, unforgettable narrative spell\, exploring the intertwined lives and legacies of Linnaeus and Buffon—as well as the groundbreaking\, often fatal adventures of their acolytes—to trace an arc of insight and discovery that extends across three centuries into the present day.
