SUMMARY:Writers Helping Writers: Descriptively Yours with Carole Bumpus
DESCRIPTION:In Literature\, description refers to the language used to bring attributes of subjects to the reader’s mind. In the next class\, Descriptively Yours\, Part II\, Carole will build on Part I by delving further into the description of the senses by adding the purpose of description in scenes and characters. Also\, what is the purpose of metaphor? Simile? Hyperbole? Or personification? \nCarole Bumpus began writing about food and travel when she stumbled upon the amazing stories of women and war in France. Her books\, A Cup of Redemption\, Recipes for Redemption\, Searching for Family and Traditions at the French Table\, Books I and II\, A September to Remember: Searching for Culinary Pleasures at the Italian Table\, and Adventures on Land & Sea: Searching for Culinary Pleasures in Provençe are available in our catalog. A retired family therapist\, Bumpus lives in Redwood Shores in the San Francisco Bay Area. Carole’s books have won rave reviews from Booklist\, Kirkus\, Foreword Reviews\, Midwest Book Review\, The Columbia Review and Fra Noi magazine\, and awards from Independent Publisher Book Awards and American Book Fest. \nCalifornia Writers Club-San Francisco Peninsula Branch members give presentations on the third Thursday of the month for anyone interested in writing. Writers Helping Writers resume for their third year giving excellent advice and pointers on writing\, publishing marketing and more.  \nRegistration is not required\, but if you register\, you’ll receive an email reminder the day before the event. \nSign up for the library newsletter and never miss another program!

SUMMARY:Poetry in the Dark
DESCRIPTION:Let’s turn off the lights and speak poems to each other. This is an intimate conversation\, not a performance. Please bring inside you a poem you know by heart. \nIMPORTANT: If you think you don’t know any poems by heart\, come anyway. \nMore details:I carry poems inside me like dear friends. I’d like to introduce you to some of them\, and to meet yours. Poetry in the Dark is not a reading or a performance; it is an intimate conversation among friends. Please join other poetry lovers in allowing our poem-friends to speak to each other\, and to us. \nHow it works:1. We sit in chairs in a circle—there is no audience.2. We turn off the lights so that no one feels they’re on the spot.3. Someone recites a poem.4. That poem inspires someone else to recite a different poem.5. It’s like the poems are talking to each other! \nThis is a magical experience. If you’re even a bit curious\, please join us. \nHosted by Cupertino Poet Laureate Keiko O’Leary. \nKeiko O’Leary has been writing poems since the sixth grade and has seen the value of poetry to enhance life for over 30 years. She has published many poems and is the author of Your Writing Matters: 34 Quick Essays to Get Unstuck and Stay Inspired. Keiko is dedicated to passing on the legacy of poetry to the next generation of poets. \nFor accessibility accommodations (ex. ASL)\, please fill out the online form at sccld.org/accessibility 7+days prior to the event. If you need assistance with the form\, speak with a staff member at your local library\, call (408) 540-3945\, or email us at ask@sccl.org.

SUMMARY:Adult Book Discussion: North Woods by Daniel Mason
DESCRIPTION:Book Cover North Woods: A Novel by Daniel Mason \nThis month the Cupertino Library Adult Book Discussion Group will talk about the novel North Woods: A Novel by Daniel Mason (2023).  A humble New England cabin is the setting for this novel about all the people who find refuge within its walls over time. Beginning with a pair of lovers who flee their rigid Puritan community for a chance to live together to an English soldier who deserts his unit to grow apples; a pair of spinster sisters\, a lovelorn painter\, a crime investigating reporter and a conman all find their way  to the cabin in the north woods through the years.  \nThe Cupertino Library Adult Book Discussion Group meets twice a month\, on the third Wednesday morning at 11 am\, or the third Thursday evening at 7pm. Adults of all ages are welcome. All meetings are sponsored by The Friends of the Cupertino Library. \nFor accessibility accommodations (ex. ASL)\, please fill out the online form at sccld.org/accessibility 7+days prior to the event.
