SUMMARY:Math Festival (with Candy Giveaway)
DESCRIPTION:Have fun\, learn\, and get a sweet treat for Halloween! The Julia Robinson Math Festival is an event that provides students with fun and meaningful math experiences to develop their mathematical confidence\, joy\, and problem solving skills. At the festival\, there will be a variety of play-based\, manipulative-based math puzzles and games for students in grades K-8 and their parents/caregivers. Each activity will be led by at least one trained volunteer who will introduce the activity and keep students engaged and excited as they explore. The festival will be open for 1.5 hours\, during which time\, kids will get to explore the festival at their own pace\, choosing where they want to go and for how long they want to do each activity. \nFree. No registration required. Space may be limited due to multiple game stations. To prevent damaging festival materials\, candy will be given to attendees as they leave. (Candy will be available while it lasts and may contain chocolate\, dairy\, gluten\, and/or nuts.) Participants can come and go during the event. DESCRIPTION:Reading Buddies provides students in grades K-3 with an opportunity to improve their reading skills by working one-on-one with a volunteer. Reading Buddies creates a positive reading experience for beginning and developing readers and helps children build confidence as readers. Our volunteers will listen to children read and provide support in phonics\, sight words\, and comprehension. Students can bring their favorite book or choose from the available selection at the West Valley Branch Library. \nFree. DESCRIPTION:Learn to design in Tinkercad and see your creation come to life with our 3D printer! Each class introduces a new technique in Tinkercad or other 3D design tools. Participants will have the opportunity to create a project which will be printed out for pick up later. \nNo experience necessary\, participants do not have to participate in all sessions. \nMay – Magnets (negative space + combining shapes)June – Stamps (scribble tool + rotation)July – Standing Sculptures (alignment + supports)August – Free Choice (importing and editing outside designs)September – Hinged Shapes (hinges + print in place) – moved to September 20October – LithophanesNovember – Cookie Cutters (2D to 3D conversion)December – Snowflakes (codeblocks for generating designs) \nAppropriate for ages 8+ – younger children will need to be accompanied by an adult to assist them with their design.
