SUMMARY:Nature Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, October 5\, 2025 Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm Location: Conference Room \nNature lovers and science enthusiasts\, we invite you to be part of our Nature Book Club!  In October\, we hit the open road\, figuratively\, as we read Crossings by Ben Goldfarm.   Every two months\, we’ll explore nonfiction books about nature and science\, and compare notes in a friendly\, welcoming discussion. \nOctober's book is Crossings by Ben Goldfarb. \nAbout Crossings:  \nGrand Prize Winner of the 2024 Banff Mountain Book Competition\nWinner of the Rachel Carson Award for Excellence in Environmental Journalism\nFinalist for the NYPL Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism\nFinalist for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award\nFinalist for the Reading the West Book Award in Nonfiction\nFinalist for the Colorado Book Award \nNamed a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Science News\, Smithsonian Magazine\, and Kirkus Reviews \n"A powerhouse of a book…comprehensive and engaging." —David Gessner\, Washington Post \nAn eye-opening account of the global ecological transformations wrought by roads\, from the award-winning author of Eager. \nSome 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth\, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. While roads are so ubiquitous they’re practically invisible to us\, wild animals experience them as entirely alien forces of death and disruption. In Crossings\, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb travels throughout the United States and around the world to investigate how roads have transformed our planet. A million animals are killed by cars each day in the U.S. alone\, but as the new science of road ecology shows\, the harms of highways extend far beyond roadkill. Creatures from antelope to salmon are losing their ability to migrate in search of food and mates; invasive plants hitch rides in tire treads; road salt contaminates lakes and rivers; and the very noise of traffic chases songbirds from vast swaths of habitat. \nYet road ecologists are also seeking to blunt the destruction through innovative solutions. Goldfarb meets with conservationists building bridges for California’s mountain lions and tunnels for English toads\, engineers deconstructing the labyrinth of logging roads that web national forests\, animal rehabbers caring for Tasmania’s car-orphaned wallabies\, and community organizers working to undo the havoc highways have wreaked upon American cities. \nToday\, as our planet’s road network continues to grow exponentially\, the science of road ecology has become increasingly vital. Written with passion and curiosity\, Crossings is a sweeping\, spirited\, and timely investigation into how humans have altered the natural world—and how we can create a better future for all living beings.

SUMMARY:The Exceptional Life of Tye Leung Schulze
DESCRIPTION:Much has been written about larger-than-life Tye Leung Schulze\, the equal rights pioneer\, the crusader against human trafficking\, and the suffragist. Her impressive list of “firsts” is an undeniable tribute to the determination and confidence of this petite four-foot-nine-inch-tall daughter of Chinese immigrants. However\, much less is known about Tye Leung\, the person who is today lost in the shadow of her own legend. This multimedia presentation will introduce you to the human side of Tye Leung Schulze. \nAll are welcome. No registration required\, but seating is on a first come\, first served basis. \nThis program is co-sponsored by the Chinese Historical & Cultural Project\, The League of Women Voters\, Southwest Santa Clara Valley\, and the Friends of Saratoga Libraries. \nAbout the SpeakerRussell Low\, a 4th generation Chinese American from California\, is the great-grandson of Transcontinental Railroad worker Hung Lai Wah and rescued child slave\, Tom Ying. Their story\, and that of their descendants\, has been featured on major media outlets and included in notable museums. Dr. Low combines his interests in research\, family history\, and storytelling in his books Three Coins\, The All-American Crew\, and A Willow Tree Becomes a Forest\, and a new illustrated book\, The Exceptional Life of Tye Leung Schulze that bring the stories to life for all generations. \nAfter the presentation\, there will be a book sale and signing by Dr. Low. \nA Historical Note \nIn 1911\, Proposition 4 “Should women be allowed to vote?” was placed on California’s ballot for a special election on October 10. By a vote of 125\,037 to 121\,450\, the proposition narrowly passed making California the sixth state in the nation to give women the right to vote. Tye Leung Schulze was the first Chinese American woman to vote in the United States when she cast a ballot in San Francisco on May 19\, 1912. \nFor accessibility accommodations (ex. ASL)\, please fill out the online form at sccld.org/accessibility 7+days prior to the event. If you need assistance with the form\, speak with a staff member at your local library\, call (408) 540-3945\, or email us at ask@lib.sccgov.org.
