After-School STEaM Club at Almaden
Drop in on Tuesdays after school for a new STEAM adventure every week.
Oct. 28 – Electrical Conductivity (Science from Scientists)
In this introduction to electrical conductors and insulators, participants are challenged to build a simple circuit, test and classify various materials as conductors or insulators, and add a switch to the circuit. Participants will then use
the evidence gathered in their exploration to explain why wires are made of a copper core encased in a plastic coating.
Children younger than age 9 must be accompanied by a parent for the program.
Nov. 4 – Coding with Scratch: Clicker Game
Code an interactive clicker game using block-based coding in Scratch! While following step-by-step instructions, kids will learn the logic behind their code and explore key coding concepts such as loops and variables.
Scratch is a visual programming language that allows students to create their own interactive stories, games, and animations. As students design Scratch projects, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. Students will create a catcher game using colorful blocks of instructions.
This class is ideal for children in 2nd grade and above. Limited to 20 students. Parents should provide a laptop for their child if possible, and should create a scratch account prior to the program start.
Nov. 18 – What’s Cooking? The Chemistry of Food!
Be ready to get messy with hands-on experiments and learn the chemistry of food! Presented by Nurturing Young Mindz Foundation.
