Nonfiction Book Discussion: The Wager by David Grann

October 12 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Cover The Wager by David Grann

Open to all adults who love to read and discuss non-fictional literature. In October, the Cupertino Library Adult Nonfiction Book Discussion group will talk about The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann (2023)   HMS Wager had set sail in 1740 with a secret mission to track a Spanish treasure ship only to be shipwrecked off the coast of South America. in 1742, two separate groups of survivors from The Wager reached Brazil, where they were greeted as heroes and Chile, several months apart, and with very different accounts of what had happened to the ship and crew. Although the survivors had all clearly been through a long ordeal, the men who had originally reached Brazil were not heroes at all–they were mutineers. To sort out the accusations of anarchy and murder among the ship’s survivors, the admiralty was at last forced to convene a court martial to discover who was telling the truth about the fate of the Wager and its crew.

The Adult Book Discussion Group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11am in Room 201B. All meetings are sponsored by The Friends of the Cupertino Library.
